Safer, Smarter Flooring for a Busy School Corridor

The Episcopal School of Dallas needed a fast, effective flooring solution after an earlier plumbing repair left them with an epoxy floor coating that eventually became a slip hazard. The school wanted to eliminate the safety risk while also upgrading the hallway floor with a cost-efficient, high-performance flooring solutions suited for heavy student traffic.

The Challenge

A few years prior, a broken underground plumbing line required emergency trenching and a quick epoxy floor coating to meet the summer project deadline. Unfortunately, the epoxy—especially on the ramp leading to restrooms, the elevator, classrooms, and the senior student lounge—proved slippery for certain footwear, creating a significant safety concern. The school needed a rapid, budget-friendly upgrade that would improve both safety and appearance.

Our Solution

Jenkins Contract Flooring recommended a two-part flooring system engineered for
high-traffic educational environments:

  • EF Contract Access Walk-Off 24″ x 24″ modular carpet tile for the ramp and outside entrance section
  • EF Contract Plateau 18″ x 36″ heavy-duty LVT for the main hallway

Why It Was Chosen:

  • Safety: Carpet tile on the ramp eliminated the slick epoxy surface

  • Durability: LVT with a 20-mil wear layer and enhanced UV urethane finish stands up to heavy use

  • Cost Efficiency: Products offered high performance while staying within budget

  • Practical Installation: Instead of removing the existing epoxy, the surface was abraded and treated with Ardex P-82 Primer to ensure proper adhesion and reduce costs

Execution & Prep

  • Avoided epoxy removal by abrading the existing surface

  • Applied Ardex P-82 Primer for strong floor prep bonding

  • Installed carpet tile and LVT per design and safety specifications

  • Completed on schedule with minimal disruption

The Outcome

The new flooring eliminated the slip hazard, creating a safe and attractive hallway for students and faculty. The combination of carpet tile and LVT provides long-term durability and a polished, professional look, all while staying within budget.

Who This Is For

Schools, universities, and public-facing facilities looking for a cost-effective, high-performance flooring solution that prioritizes safety in high-traffic areas.

Feedback:

School staff praised both the appearance and the functionality of the new floor. The high-traffic corridor now reflects the school’s commitment to safety and quality.
